9 easy ways to get in more steps without adding more to your schedule
Physical activity doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, one of the simplest (and cheapest!) things you can do to support your health and weight goals is walk. 👣
Staying active throughout the day boosts your calorie burn, helps improve your energy balance, and can enhance your mood and focus — all without spending hours at the gym. The key is to build more movement into your everyday routine, not on top of it.
If you’re aiming for 8,000–10,000 steps a day (which is a great general target), start by breaking it into smaller, manageable chunks.
💡 Quick reference: 10 minutes of walking = approx. 1,000 steps
Here are 9 ways to sneak in more steps, even when your schedule feels packed:
1. School pickup laps
Picking up your kids? Pop on your runners and get there 10–15 minutes early for a walk around the block. It’s a calm moment for you before the chaos begins.
2. Park further away
Heading to the supermarket or shopping centre? Park at the back of the lot or a few levels up and take the stairs. Those extra steps add up, especially if you're running multiple errands.
3. Walk and talk
Got a phone meeting or catch-up call? Turn it into a walking meeting. Whether you're pacing around the house or heading outside, it’s a simple way to multitask.
4. Use your tech nudges
Set reminders on your phone or use your Fitbit/Apple Watch to get up every hour. Walk to refill your water, go outside, or do a quick lap of your space.
5. Maximise your lunch break
Eat your lunch in the first 10–15 minutes, then use the rest of your break for a quick stroll. You’ll return to your desk refreshed and more productive.
6. Beat the commute boredom
Waiting for public transport? Walk to the next station or stop if time allows. It could become a quiet part of your day that you actually look forward to.
7. Walk to your workout
If you're heading to the gym, try parking a few streets away or walking there if it's close enough. It’s a warm-up that doesn’t feel like extra work.
8. Stairs over lifts
Make it a rule — take the stairs when you can. It’s a great mini leg workout and sneaky step booster.
9. Coffee catch-ups with a twist
Meeting a friend? Grab your coffee takeaway and walk together. Good company makes the steps fly by, and you’ll probably end up walking much longer than planned.
Bonus tips:
Walk while listening to podcasts, audiobooks or music — it makes the time fly
Create a personal or family step challenge for a little friendly competition
Invest in comfortable shoes you actually want to wear
Final thoughts
Every step counts, and it doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Look at your day, find the gaps, and experiment with ways to move a little more without overhauling your schedule.
You’ll be surprised how quickly it becomes second nature.
