Nutella Alternatives: Better-for-you spreads you’ll still love

Nutella lovers, don’t come for me…
I love Nutella too. But since becoming more conscious of ingredient labels and hidden additives, I just can’t ignore what’s actually in that iconic jar of chocolatey temptation.

And let’s be honest — once I open it, it’s game over. The spoon’s in and I’m not stopping.

What’s really in Nutella?

If you’ve ever flipped over the jar and looked at the nutrition panel, you might’ve noticed:

  • Sugar is the first ingredient

  • Palm oil is second

  • Then you’ll see skim milk powder, cocoa, lecithin (emulsifier), and vanillin (artificial flavour)

That’s a lot of additives, especially when it’s so easy to go back for seconds (or thirds).

If you’re trying to be more mindful of what you’re putting into your body, it’s worth exploring better-for-you options that still hit the choc-hazelnut spot.

What to try instead

There are a few great alternatives on the shelf these days — and one of my faves is the Mayver’s range. Their spreads are made right here in Melbourne, and they don’t hide their ingredients behind numbers or fillers.

👉 They're still just as satisfying, but without the added emulsifiers and artificial flavourings.

Or… make your own!

One of my favourite swaps is a homemade choc hazelnut spread. You don’t need a ton of ingredients — even just four wholefood ingredients can give you a rich, creamy spread you’ll be obsessed with.

Check out my DIY version. It’s surprisingly easy and so delicious.
